[PConline News] Last year, due to the rising prices of Samsung's storage products, we couldn't afford to buy memory sticks or SSDs. Now, Samsung has managed to lose us to SLC and MLC. In August this year, there were reports that Samsung's next-generation storage will say goodbye to MLC, with the 970/980 series all using 3D TLC flash memory. Recently, new updates on the 970/980 series have emerged, revealing that it will be released in January 2018, featuring 64-layer 3-bit V-NAND flash memory.
The first news about the 970/980 series came from the NVMe integrator circuit list published by the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Laboratory, where Samsung’s 97x and 98x models were listed.
Currently, more accurate information about the 980 comes from an OEM product called PM981, based on the Samsung 980 SSD. It appeared on a Vietnamese e-commerce site, available in 512GB and 1TB capacities. Both models use TLC flash memory, support PCIe 3.0x4 channels, and offer read/write speeds up to 3200/2400 MB/s, with 4K random write performance reaching 440K IOPS and 380 IOPS for reads.
PM981 models are also now available on Taobao, equipped with the Polaris V2 controller and firmware based on the EXA7101Q chip. The exact pricing can be checked directly on Taobao.
According to Samsung's naming conventions, the 970/980 series is actually the 970 EVO/PRO, but since they all use TLC, no suffix was added. With Samsung's flagship SSDs moving towards TLC and even QLC in the future, it's becoming harder to distinguish between MLC and TLC models, making them less memorable for consumers.
