On October 25, 2017, TDK made a significant breakthrough by introducing the InvenSense ICM-20789, a MEMS 7-axis inertial sensor that combines a 3-axis gyroscope, a 3-axis accelerometer, and an ultra-low noise MEMS capacitive air pressure sensor. This innovative component is designed for high-precision applications, featuring industry-leading pressure noise performance of just 0.4 Pa RMS. It also offers excellent temperature stability with a low temperature coefficient of ±0.5 Pa/°C, making it ideal for environments where accuracy is critical.
Thanks to its low temperature coefficient, the ICM-20789 enables highly accurate measurement of very small differential pressures—down to ±1 Pa. This level of precision allows the sensor to detect height changes as small as 5 cm, which is particularly beneficial for drone altitude control and wearable devices that track movement and fitness metrics. The improved pressure-noise performance enhances the overall reliability and responsiveness of these systems.
The ICM-20789 also includes a high-performance 6-axis motion sensor, which integrates advanced rotation and linear motion tracking. This helps simplify the fusion of sensor data, making it easier to implement in various applications. The combination of motion and pressure sensing makes this device versatile, suitable for use in wearables, AR/VR gesture recognition, gaming, and fitness tracking like step or stair counting. Its compact design and efficient performance make it a powerful solution for developers looking to enhance user experience across multiple platforms.
