In a major breakthrough for underwater communication, Japan's marine research institutions have successfully developed high-capacity optical communication technology that enables two-way data transmission over 100 meters at a speed of 20 megabits per second (Mbps). This advancement is expected to revolutionize deep-sea exploration and military applications, offering a much faster alternative to traditional methods.
Currently, underwater wireless communication primarily relies on acoustic technology, which is slow—only about 10 kilobits per second (kbps)—and unable to support large-scale data transfer. However, a team from the Japan Marine Research and Development Agency recently tested a new water-based optical communication device in depths ranging from 700 to 800 meters. The test was successful, achieving real-time video transmission through optical signals over a distance of 100 meters at 20 Mbps.
This technology could significantly enhance underwater operations, including submarine exploration, communication between submersible instruments, ships, and drones, as well as military applications such as secure underwater communications. The agency, known for its deep-sea exploration projects like the Deep Sea 6500 and Earth vessels, has received financial backing from the Japanese Defense Ministry to further develop this cutting-edge technology.
