[PConline News] Last year, Samsung's rising prices for storage products made it difficult for us to afford memory sticks and SSDs. However, Samsung has now managed to lose us to SLC and MLC. In August this year, there were reports that Samsung's next-generation storage would say goodbye to MLC, with the 970/980 series using 3D TLC flash memory. Recently, new updates about the 970/980 series have emerged, revealing that it will be released in January 2018, featuring 64-layer 3-bit V-NAND flash memory.
The first hints of the 970/980 series came from Samsung’s 97x and 98x products appearing on the NVMe integrator circuit list from the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Laboratory. This was a strong indication that the new SSDs were in development and nearing release.
Currently, more accurate information about the 980 series comes from the OEM product PM981 based on the Samsung 980 SSD, which appeared on an e-commerce site in Vietnam. The available versions are 512GB and 1TB, both utilizing TLC flash memory. They support PCIe 3.0 x4 channels, with read and write speeds up to 3200 MB/s and 2400 MB/s respectively. Random 4K write performance reaches 440K IOPS, while read performance is around 380 IOPS.

According to Samsung's naming convention, the 970/980 series is actually the 970 EVO/PRO. However, since all models use TLC, they don't have any additional suffixes. With Samsung's flagship SSDs moving toward TLC and even planning to adopt QLC in the future, it's becoming increasingly rare to see MLC-based models. As a result, MLC may soon become a thing of the past, making it harder for consumers to remember or recognize.
