Microsoft is reportedly working on a new AI chip that could be integrated into the next generation of HoloLens head-mounted displays, according to an interview with Panos Panay, Microsoft’s global vice president for its device division. The company is exploring how this AI chip could enhance mixed reality experiences by recognizing objects based on the user's line of sight. Beyond HoloLens, Microsoft may also incorporate the chip into other hardware products, signaling a broader push into AI-driven technology.
In July, Microsoft first announced its plans to develop a custom processor for the next version of HoloLens, which combines real-world visuals with digital overlays. This mixed reality headset allows users to interact through touch, making it a unique tool for both entertainment and productivity. The new AI chip aims to make these interactions more intuitive and efficient, enabling devices to process complex tasks locally without relying on cloud connectivity.
This move marks Microsoft’s first major step into the AI chip market, competing against industry giants like Apple and Google. Panay confirmed that the chip will not only power HoloLens but also be available for other Microsoft products. “We need to continue exploring silicon and developing chipsets that bring sensors to life,†he said in a recent TV interview. “This will allow people to connect better with others and their devices.â€
Microsoft has been expanding its hardware portfolio over the years, launching products like Surface, Xbox, and HoloLens. These devices are designed to integrate seamlessly with Microsoft’s ecosystem, offering advanced computing and immersive experiences. As the race for AI chips intensifies, companies like Huawei and Apple have already introduced their own AI processors, such as the Kirin 970 and A11 Bionic chips, respectively.
By embedding AI capabilities directly into devices, manufacturers can improve performance and reduce latency. Microsoft is also collaborating with hardware partners, including Huawei and Lenovo, to bring these AI chips to a wider audience. Panay mentioned that the company is considering licensing the technology to its partners, ensuring that more users can benefit from these advancements.
“We believe in the power of collaboration,†Panay said. “By integrating AI into our products and sharing it with our partners, we can ensure that more people have access to cutting-edge technology.†This approach aligns with Microsoft’s vision of making AI more accessible and impactful across various platforms and industries.
