The Samsung Gear VR, though developed by Oculus, is more of a software platform tailored for mobile devices. Two years ago, Bigscreen launched its PC-based VR platform using the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Their goal was to bring the immersive PC VR experience to mobile headsets, allowing users to watch videos through the headset or even stream content. It also served as a social hub where friends could gather in virtual space to watch movies or play games together.
Now, the focus has shifted to mobile platforms. Bigscreen is launching an internal beta for its mobile software, starting with the Gear VR. The first feature in this closed beta is the “multilayer†function, which enables cross-platform interaction—meaning PC users can now connect and interact with mobile users within the same VR environment.
In the future, Bigscreen aims to introduce more single-user features, such as watching locally stored videos or streaming content on the go. It will also allow transferring PC desktop content to mobile VR via Wi-Fi, making it easier to enjoy both video and gaming experiences on the move.
Considering the constraints of mobile VR, especially the limited use of only one controller, the practical implementation will be crucial. Bigscreen also plans to support Google Daydream and Oculus Go in the future. Notably, the Oculus Go shares more similarities with the Gear VR than the more powerful Oculus Rift, making it a natural next step for expansion.
Overall, Bigscreen’s efforts show a clear direction toward bridging the gap between PC and mobile VR, offering users a more seamless and connected virtual experience across different platforms.
