Looking at the patent layout of LED filament lamp from Jingda v. Adamax infringement case

Epistar (Crystal) filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Adamax (sold under the Newhouse LighTIng brand) in the US District Court for the Northern California on August 30, 2016. In the lawsuit, Jingdian pointed out that Newhouse LighTIng products infringed six crystal patents and applied for a court to issue an injunction to prohibit Adamax from continuing to sell infringing Newhouse LighTIng products.

In the lawsuit, Jingdian pointed out that Newhouse LighTIng filament bulbs, for example, dimmable candle-type 3.5-watt LED retro-style Edison filament lamps, infringe a number of US patents for crystal power, including US6346771, US7489068, US7560738, US8240881, US8791467, US9065022.

In recent years, in the industrial background of the price and profit of LED lighting products, the filament lamp can be described as a dark horse, which has attracted much attention. In the past, the bottleneck of the filament lamp was the process and yield. Today, the crystal battery put the patented threshold of the filament package on the front.

What is a filament lamp package?

LED filament package is a kind of technological innovation. We know that the common LED lamp bead is a single chip with a voltage of 3.0V fixed in the plastic holder cup, and then dispensed, that is, PLCC package. The LED filament is a plurality of chips fixed in series on the glass substrate, and then is completed by compression molding. The LED filament has the characteristics of small current and high voltage, which effectively reduces the heat generation of the LED and the cost of the driver, and has outstanding advantages.

This is the LED filament, a new LED package form, and the most popular LED product. It can be used to make LED bulbs similar in shape to incandescent lamps, which can easily achieve 360-degree full-circumference.

The LED filament process usually consists of 28 0.02w 1016 LED chips packaged in series on a 38mm long, 1.5mm diameter glass substrate, and then a top-of-the-line fluorescent glue. The LED filament is driven by 10mA current, the voltage is 84V, the power is 0.84w, the light energy is 100lm, and the luminous efficiency can reach 120lm/w. If it is matched with the red chip, the color rendering index can reach above 95, and it has excellent photoelectric performance.

LED light bulbs can be used to make a variety of small and medium power LED bulbs or candle lights. Usually four LED filaments are used. Two strings and two LED bulbs or candle lamps with a power of 3.6W can be designed. With a luminous flux of 400 lm, it can replace the 40W incandescent bulb.

The incandescent lamp factory can use the existing technology and assembly line to produce LED filament bulbs, and use the original glass bracket of incandescent lamps to design the connection of LED filaments; the special glass with high transmittance of incandescent lamps and the production of automatic blown glass bulbs Technology, design and production of bulbs that resemble incandescent lamps, which can produce LED filament bulbs with good cost performance.

According to Jingdian, the current LED filament lamp pays more attention to patents than before, because one of the key technologies of LED filament is to glue several LEDs on the transparent substrate to make the LED filament lamp produce better light type and luminous effect. . This key technology has been patented by the company in the United States, Europe, China, Taiwan and other places in 2004, and has been authorized to Foshan Lighting (FSL) and other manufacturers, and continue to negotiate with other willing customers, hope that through Patent licensing, expand cooperation with strategic partners, and then expand the market and establish a competitive advantage.

The layout of patents is divided into sniper strategy, blocking strategy, shotgun strategy, carpet strategy, vandalism strategy, encirclement strategy, scarecrow strategy, isolation strategy, “design freedom” strategy, and sound eastward strategy. Commonly used by the Japanese, also known as the "pile fence strategy", the method is to surround or enclose the basis or key patents of competitors with multiple applied patents.

Blocking all commercialization of competitors, making competitors' R&D and production have nowhere to go, forcing opponents to negotiate technical interactions. This kind of strategy needs to be adopted by enterprises of a certain scale because it requires a large number of patent applications and the cost is not low. Each company adopts different strategies according to different development conditions and specific situations, and utilizes patent weapons to safeguard the company's interests.
