5G commercial or advance to 2019! Industry chain will be challenged

In the previously announced China 5G development schedule, 2020 has been regarded as the starting point for 5G commercial use. However, the industry believes that this time point will be one year ahead of schedule. In 2019, a relatively large-scale deployment of 5G networks will begin. Strictly speaking, it is the deployment of 5G pre-commercial networks. "China's coverage is large. Even if the 5G network is a trial network, it is much larger than the foreign operators." Recently, Meng Pu, chairman of Qualcomm China, made the above remarks in an interview with the media.

I hope to advance the network deployment time by one year.

During the electronic information expo, Meng Pu said that the industry had always believed that 2020 was the time for 5G commercial use. Now everyone sees the benefits brought by 5G to the industry, such as supporting autopilot and massive deployment of intelligent terminals. Big demand needs to advance the time.

At the end of February this year, Qualcomm and more than 20 major operators and manufacturers in the industry have reached an agreement, in the 3GPP standards organization, the 5G new air interface (NR) standard will be solidified before the end of this year, to achieve 5G commercial in 2019 Prepare for deployment and lay the foundation, which is one year ahead of everyone's previously recognized 5G commercial time in 2020.

On April 6, Erlang, the head of Ericsson's Northeast Asia market, also sent the same message. He said that the 5G market will drive an ecosystem development, with more operators, including ICT vendors, and some vertical industry integrators. Together, promote the future of 5G development. Therefore, more than 20 leading ICT vendors, including Ericsson, launched an initiative in Barcelona to promote the 5G standardization process more quickly. The original industry expects 5G to achieve rapid large-scale deployment in 2020, and this initiative hopes to achieve large-scale 5G commercial deployment in 2019.

At the 75th plenary meeting of the 3GPP RAN held in March, 3GPP officially adopted the 5G acceleration proposal.

According to this proposal, 3GPP will accelerate the 5G new air interface (NR) standard process in the R15 version, and advance the 5G NR non-independent networking (option 3) feature to December 2017, half a year ahead of the original plan. The time course of the feature remains the same. In addition, the conference also decided to freeze the independent 5G new airspace standard in June 2018 and September 2018 respectively.

The proposal was obtained by AT&T, NTT DOCOMO, SK Telecom, Vodafone, Ericsson, Qualcomm, BT, Telstra, Korea Telecom, Intel, LG Uplus, KDDI, LG Electronics, Telia Company, Swisscom, TIM, ETIsalat Group, Huawei, Sprint , vivo, ZTE, Deutsche Telekom and many other manufacturers support.

The 5G NR non-independent networking refers to the 5G NR networking with the LTE wireless network/EPC core network as the anchor network, which is considered to be the fastest 5G NR networking mode.

Industry acceleration has already appeared

In fact, the acceleration of the 5G industry has already begun to take shape. At the "5G Global Conference" held in Beijing in June 2016, the then head of the IMT-2020 (5G) promotion team, Cao Shumin, has called on the industry to prevent the fragmentation of the 5G standard. The 5G standard should be as uniform as possible.

Why is the 5G standard fragmented? Mainly from some mobile communication operators in North America, Japan and South Korea, due to market competition and business promotion needs, I hope to deploy 5G as soon as possible. North American operators want to solve the problem of large-flow access, and Korean operators hope to launch 5G services at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in Korea.

US operator Verizon and South Korea's KT, SK Telecom and Japan's NTT DOCOMO announced the establishment of the 5G Open Trial SpecificaTIon Alliance. In front of 3GPP, the Verizon version of the 5G standard (V5G) was released. However, V5G cannot meet the 3GPP 5G standard on some key technologies, especially the subcarrier spacing of the 5G new air interface, which means that Verizon's V5G equipment cannot be upgraded from hardware to 3GPP 5G standard. Verizon hopes to solve the large-flow access by using the millimeter-wave large-bandwidth technology. However, the millimeter-wave network has not been solved in terms of mobility, so this 5G device can only be used for fixed wireless access. However, for the entire communications market, pre-commercial devices that are inconsistent with the 3GPP standards will appear on the market.

In an interview with reporters, Huawei 5G CTO Tongwen said that in order to prevent the fragmentation of standards, everyone's consensus is to accelerate industrial development to prevent splitting. This involves whether 3GPP needs to adjust the timetable to deal with it.

Careful observation, in the acceleration proposal proposed to 3GPP, there are no three major operators in China. However, it does not mean that Chinese operators are not active. At present, China Mobile's 5G timetable has been announced. The 5G trial network will be built in 2018, the scale test will be conducted in 2019, and commercial use in 2020.

Last year, at a conference on the nature of the second phase of China's 5G technology research and trial, Huang Yuhong, vice president of China Mobile Communications Research Institute, said that China Mobile should prepare for commercialization in advance, and select 4 to 5 cities in 2017, each The city will build about seven sites for system verification to form pre-commercial prototypes; in 2018, the site will reach 20 scale trials to form end-to-end commercial products and pre-commercial networks; in 2019, each pilot city will reach a scale of more than 100 sites.

Chang Gang said that in fact, there are some concerns about 5G investment in the industry. When promoting 5G deployment from the perspective of operators, it is hoped that at the regulatory level or technical level, it can provide a more cost-effective way to reduce the overall investment pressure and threshold of 5G deployment.

The commercial industry chain is challenged one year ahead of schedule

Is it ready to support commercial use one year ahead of time, is the industry chain ready? From the current situation, the challenge is still relatively large.

Qualcomm has a positive attitude towards this. Meng Pu said that from the perspective of 5G terminal deployment, Qualcomm launched the industry's first 5G modem, the Xiaolong X50 modem released in October last year, which can support 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G new air interface solutions at the same time. In this way, support the implementation of 5G commercial terminals at the end of 2018 and 2019. "From Qualcomm, we are doing a lot of investment and efforts to support the commercial deployment and scale deployment of the 5G new air interface system in the global market in 2019," said Meng Pu.

From the perspective of China's overall promotion of 5G, the second phase of 5G was officially launched in September 2016. Huawei, Ericsson, ZTE, Datang, Nokia and Shanghai Bell, Samsung and some chip and instrument companies participated in the test. The China 5G technology R&D test was organized and implemented by the IMT-2020 (5G) promotion group. China Mobile, China Telecom, China Unicom, Ducomo, and China Xintong Institute formed a test group. At present, we have planned the world's largest 5G test field in Huairou, Beijing, and completed the site planning of 30 stations, which can meet the needs of outfield single station and networking performance testing. At the same time, Spreadtrum, MTK and other chip companies, Keysight, Rohde Schwartz, Datang Lianyi, Xinghe Highlights and other instrument companies also participated in the test.

In the middle and late February, Huawei tested the environment in Beijing Huairou's field, and took the lead in conducting 3.5GHz 5G new air interface performance testing and interoperability testing with instrument/chip companies. In the field performance test, Huawei completed the field performance test of continuous wide-area coverage, low-latency, high-reliability, low-power, large-connection and hybrid scenarios based on the unified air interface solution, respectively achieving 10Gbps peak rate and less than 1ms air interface. Delay and 5G key performance indicator requirements for more than 1 million connections.

In addition, in order to verify Huawei's 5G new air interface technology solution, Huawei's 5G prototype system has conducted interoperability testing with instrument companies such as Rohde Schwarz, Keysight and Datang Lianyi, and verified Huawei's new air interface technology solution based on third-party test instruments. Techniques such as parameter sets, frame structures, and new waveforms. At the same time, China Mobile and Qualcomm and ZTE also announced that they will begin interoperability testing based on 3.5GHz 5G new air interface in the second half of this year.

At the end of March, Datang Telecom Group took the lead in launching tests. At present, the central station and core computer room have been completed. It is a complete test environment with access network, core network, edge computing and test terminals. The 5G field rate and coverage capability test, the handover between the macro base station and the dense coverage small base station in the 3.5 GHz band, and the coverage comparison for the future fusion network are made. At present, with the support of large-scale antenna technology, the coverage radius of 5G network can be equivalent to 4G, which means that once the wireless access side of 5G network is built, it can be upgraded and upgraded by using 4G site, which will greatly save network construction funds and speed up network construction. .

But the challenge is undoubted. First, 5G technology is a systemic technology. The wireless access and network bearer have great innovations. The new air interface is only mature on the wireless access side, but the network slice and NFV proposed in the 5G network bearer. Technology should not be deployed in 2019. Second, even on the 5G wireless access side, the maturity of the entire industry chain needs to be strengthened. For example, the key technology - large-scale antenna array, the requirements for the consistency of the basic device vibrator are very high. At present, manufacturers can provide high prices. Thirdly, 5G Internet of Everything is still in the pipeline. Internet of Vehicles, VR and industrial robots are in the industrial incubation period. High-traffic video applications also require 4K, 8K and 3D technologies. Further maturity to pull, how the market environment of these technologies in 2019, can not be estimated now.

5G is commercialized one year in advance, and it will work in practice. It remains to be proved by time.
