New vortex beam technology increases fiber speed by 15 times

According to foreign media reports: Boston University, University of Southern California and OFS Fitel, a fiber optic company in Denmark, jointly discovered a new technology that can break through the transmission speed of modern optical fiber. They successfully changed the linear beam in the optical fiber into a vortex beam. The transmission speed of the fiber is 15 times that of the fiber used in advanced data centers.

The data transmission in the optical fiber depends on the light beam, and the more light beams can carry more data, this new generation of optical fiber uses a vortex beam called orbital angular momentum (OAM) to add more light. Carrier.

Siddharth Ramachandran, an engineering professor at Boston University who is in charge of this research project, said that in the decades since the deployment of optical fiber networks, everyone believes that OAM beams are inherently unstable in optical fibers, but their design solves this problem. The scientific and technical fields that have explored the characteristics of OAM have had a major impact, including increasing the amount of data transmission over optical fibers.

The study successfully provided a transmission speed of 1.6 Tb per second in a 1.1-kilometer optical fiber, which is 15 times the speed of the optical fiber used in modern advanced data centers. Because the fiber length of the experiment is still insufficient to support the submarine cable, the outside world believes that the best application at this stage is to use it as a data center transmission.
