WIFI module easily realizes access to IoT case

How do I network my existing devices? I think this is a question that most product designers are considering. As a R&D engineer, the author shares this article for everyone and introduces the implementation case of the company's original design products successfully connected to the Internet of Things by adding the WGM110 WiFi module.

Designing a master chip with an Ethernet connection that enables the functionality of existing products is an excellent choice both in terms of integration and hardware cost. However, the company's original products have been put into the market for many years, regardless of hardware or software after many years of experiments and customer field verification, if the hardware design is modified, the potential risks of stability will be highlighted. In addition, the R&D technical risk, certification cost and overall design cost of the self-designed RF module are also difficult to estimate. After comprehensive consideration, we chose Silicon Labs' low-power plug-and-play WiFi module WGM110.

Silicon Labs provides a complete layout design guide and bill of materials for the design of the WGM110 module. Its highly integrated module design makes the motherboard design easy, effectively reducing development time and saving development time. Our hardware engineers also designed the test prototype in just one day.

Adding a function implementation module based on the original design, we can still accept from the perspective of technical risk. The WGM110 module provides a variety of communication interfaces, such as I2C interface, USB interface and Uart interface, in terms of hardware connection. In this design, we used the Uart interface as a bridge for the data exchange between the main control chip and the WiFi module (there is a small hint here, the TXD and RXD of the Uart interface of both sides should be cross-connected), and the hardware connection diagram is as shown in Figure 1 below. The optimization scheme has simple hardware and software design. The default serial port baud rate of the WGM110 module is 115200. The master can complete the establishment of the communication link of both parties only by routine configuration. The WGM110 module embeds the BG Script scripting language, providing two very intimate configurations of GUI and command line. Silicon Labs official website provides BGTool software, which can configure module parameters in the GUI environment. Even engineers who are not familiar with the technology can easily adapt to parameter configuration, which will not be described here. The MCU and the module we use communicate without the interface, so it is more practical to use BGAPI to configure the parameters.

The BGAPI protocol is similar to the AT command, and uses the "send-response" data exchange method. The data flow is as shown in the following figure:

The rest is to read the official api instruction set, send the corresponding instruction, and then parse the response instruction. Below I will give an example of BGAPI configuration to illustrate:

Example: Read the MAC address of the current WiFi module for display.

Send (hex): 08 01 02 00 00

Answer (hex): 08 03 02 00 00 00 00 (answer successful)

Event (hex): 88 07 02 00 00 08 D4 0C 3D 29 63

In the above example, the red font is the current WiFi Mac address. After parsing, we can display the Mac address to the end client through the LCD screen. Is not it simple!

Our product has only added a WGM110 WiFi module to successfully support Ethernet wireless connection.
