Toray develops innovative manufacturing process for optical wiring film

Toray has developed a basic technology for forming an optical wiring film for an optical transmission system by utilizing a technique of preparing a thin film by using a nano-level precision laminated polymer. Compared with the original optical wiring process, the cost can be reduced. The company is advancing development and strives to make the technology practical.

Based on the melt extrusion process using existing optical polymers, the company's nano-stacking technology enables simultaneous high-precision configuration of multiple cores. Compared with the original method, in addition to reducing the number of processes, it is also possible to increase the size and increase the area. In addition, since this technology can form a precisely controlled core shape and interface structure, it is also expected to reduce transmission loss. Moreover, with the realization of large-area, it can also be applied to other fields such as illumination of automobiles, building materials, backlights for liquid crystal displays, and optical waveguides.

The development uses two key technologies. The first is nano-lamination technology. Toray improved the lamination technology based on viscoelastic simulation and visual analysis of heterogeneous polymer mixed melt streams, and newly developed a technology capable of tens to thousands of layers in the nanometer order in the thickness direction. Thus, by using the plastic film mass production technology melt extrusion process, an optical wiring film having high core position accuracy can be manufactured. The second is the precision interface structure control technology. High-precision control of polymer design and mixed melt flow, and precise control of the polymer interface structure in nanometer scale, thus successfully reducing the scattering at the core interface. The transmission loss is reduced to less than 0.03 dB/cm. Moreover, the transmission speed is also as high as 10 Gbps or more.

The development is also the result of the new generation of strategic technology and technology-funded business of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
