A new generation of mobile audio chips (ST-Ericsson)

With the advantages of analog and mixed-signal processing technology, ST-Ericsson has introduced the latest high-quality audio digital-to-analog converter (DAC), the STw5211, for the mobile music market. The new product integrates ST-Ericsson's innovative Play Time Extend (PTETM) processing technology with a signal-to-noise ratio of only 102 dB across the entire audio path. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will be able to use the STw5211 to create the music audio with the highest audio levels, and the music playback time is doubled compared to the usual 10 hours. The STw5211 is a single-chip audio solution that uses the ultra-small wafer-level chip scale package (WLCSP) to achieve the industry's highest level of integration and price/performance, and significantly extend playback time.

Monica de Virgiliis, vice president of the ST-Ericsson Wireless Multimedia Products Group, said: "Consumers demand music phones with higher audio quality and longer playback times, and the STw5211 is designed to meet this need. In general, features The more powerful, the higher the quality, the higher the power consumption. However, the STW5211 uses PTE technology, the music can be played independently, and the rest of the platform can be switched to the power saving state during playback, so the battery life is greatly extended, and the audio Quality is not affected at all."

The STw5211 further extends ST-Ericsson's rich audio solutions with enhanced performance. STw5211 is scheduled to be mass-produced in August 2009 and samples will be available in April.

The STw5211 is manufactured in a leading 0.13-micron analog CMOS process with extremely high integration. It is the only single-chip solution in its class with minimal material cost (BOM) and is available in a small 2.6 mm x 2.6 mm WLCSP package. The STw5211 integrates a power management circuit that can be directly connected to the battery without the need for an external voltage regulator. In addition, the headphone amplifier is of the "true ground" type and does not require a coupling capacitor.

The main features of STw5211 include:
• Premium audio with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of only 102 dB
• Integrated PTE technology for extended playback time • Total harmonic distortion (THD): 66 dB
• Sample rate conversion: 8 – 192 kHz
• System clock generator • 2.6 mm x 2.6 mm ultra-small package with only a few external components required
