Americans who love the sun are high-risk people with skin cancer. Researchers at the University of California, Irvine are investigating a special way to treat skin cancer with light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
This treatment, called photodynamic therapy (PDT), was previously approved by the FDA for the treatment of esophageal and lung cancer. The principle is that chemicals that absorb light are injected into the tumor and then exposed to light, creating new substances that destroy cancer cells. The team at the University of California, Irvine, designed an LED five-color lighting array that uses unique intensity changes to affect skin pigments in different tissue structures, potentially locating, monitoring, and treating the most common basal cell carcinomas.
