ON Semiconductor pushes PFC dimmable LED driver - NCL30000

ON Semiconductor, the premier supplier of high-performance, energy-efficient silicon solutions for green electronics (ON Semiconductor introduces new power factor correction (PFC) dimmable light-emitting diode (LED) driver - NCL30000 for residential and commercial applications Lighting applications.
The NCL30000 is available in a compact 8-pin surface mount package that uses a critical conduction mode (CrM) flyback architecture to provide a high power factor greater than 0.95 in a single-segment topology, eliminating the need for DC-DC conversion sections . Constant On-Time CrM operation is particularly well-suited for isolated flyback LED applications because of its simple control principle and extremely high energy efficiency even at low power levels. This is important in the field of LED lighting, with the aim of meeting various regulatory requirements and overall system efficacy requirements.
Typical applications include LED driver power supplies, LED downlights, triac TRIAC dimmable LEDs, and power factor corrected constant voltage power supplies. This device is compatible with leading edge TRIAC dimmers and trailing edge transistor dimmers. Depending on the dimmer used, the LED output can be adjusted down to 2%.

The company offers three 15 watt (W) reference designs designed to drive 4 to 15 LEDs at 350 milliamps (mA). They can also be easily adjusted to match power levels from 5 W to 30 W:
· NCL30000LED1GEVB: 115 Vac version, 90 to 135 Vac input line voltage (TRIAC dimming)
· NCL30000LED2GEVB: 230 Vac version, 180 to 265 Vac (TRIAC dimming)
· NCL30000LED3GEVB: Extended Universal Edition, 90 to 305 Vac
The NCL30000 operates over the -40°C to +125°C temperature range, ensuring the wide range of environmental operating conditions specified in most solid-state lighting (SSL) applications. The NCL30000 has a low startup current of typically 24 microamps (μA) and a low operating current of typically 2 mA for an energy efficient design.
Other key features of the NCL30000 include programmable on-time limiters, zero-current sense (ZCD) sensing modules, gate drivers, and all other pulse width modulation (PWM) circuits and protection features required to apply CrM switching power supplies. The NCL30000 is a key component of ON Semiconductor's fully tested GreenPoint reference design for off-line, high power factor TRIAC dimming LED drivers designed for use in US Energy Star commercial and residential lighting applications. The NCL30000 is a lead-free, halogen-free and brominated flame retardant (BFR) device that is RoHS compliant and is available in an 8-lead SOIC package. The unit price is $0.45 per 10,000-piece lot.
