The femtosecond optical comb and its application research group at the National Time Service Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has achieved significant progress in the development of erbium-doped fiber femtosecond optical comb frequency control technology. They have successfully demonstrated wide-band (MHz-level) large-scale frequency control using a single, unified control method. This breakthrough not only simplifies the structural design of the system but also enhances the overall reliability of the optical comb while maintaining high performance standards.
To achieve this, the research team developed an electro-optic crystal specifically for their system, which allows precise control over the laser's polarization state. By leveraging the birefringence effect within the entire optical cavity, they were able to implement large-scale frequency control. Compared to existing technologies, this approach offers at least an order of magnitude improvement in frequency control range under wideband conditions. This innovation effectively addresses the long-standing challenge of achieving both high bandwidth and a broad control range with a single method.
The findings were recently published in the 24th issue of *Optics Letters*, and the team has already filed for invention patents on the technology. The research was supported by several key funding programs, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ “100-person Plan,†the Strategic Pilot Science and Technology Project, the Scientific Research Equipment Development Project, and the “Western Light†talent training initiative.
