Panasonic: Direct-lit LED backlight technology dies within two years

LED backlight technology is becoming more and more widely used on TV, and TV manufacturers are also increasing the proportion of their own LED backlight models. The current LED backlight technology is generally divided into direct LED (Lead LED) and edge LED (Edge LED), and the advantages and disadvantages of these two technologies have been debated. At the IFA 2010 Berlin Electronics Show held recently, Matsushita executives believe that the direct-lit LED backlight technology is not very applicable and will disappear within two years. Edge-lit LED-backlit TVs and plasmas will be the mainstream of the future. Wagenseil, manager of Panasonic's technical marketing department, said: "We believe that direct-lit LED-backlit TVs will not have any market, mainly because its price is too high."

Wagenseil explained: "The direct-lit backlight technology requires more LEDs than the edge type, and the current LED supply faces a major gap, so I don't think there is much future for direct-lit LEDs.

But in today's TV market, manufacturers such as LG and Philips are also launching direct-lit LED-backlit TVs. Wagenseil said that more TV manufacturers are abandoning direct-lit LED backlight technology, and edge-type will be the mainstream of the future.

However, Wagensel is still more esteemed about his plasma technology. He believes that the edge-type LED backlight is more energy-efficient and slimmer, but the image quality is worse than plasma.
