MILPITAS (Linear Technology Corporation) has introduced a new line of low-power, high-performance 8-channel micro-modules (μModule?) featuring 14-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) with sampling rates up to 125Msps. These ADCs are ideal for applications requiring high-speed data acquisition while maintaining low power consumption. The LTM9011-14 is a standout model in this family, offering 14-bit resolution and 125Msps sampling rate. It delivers an impressive 73.1dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and 88dB spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) at baseband, all while consuming just 140mW per channel.
The LTM9009-14 and LTM9010-14 models operate at 80Msps and 105Msps respectively, drawing 94mW and 113mW per channel. All devices in the LTM9011 family run on a 1.8V supply and feature a sleep mode that drops power consumption to a mere 2mW. This makes them perfect for power-sensitive applications like MIMO WiMAX/LTE systems, remote radio heads (RRH), military anti-jamming equipment, radar, medical imaging, and ultrasound systems.
Data from the LTM9011 is output via serial LVDS, reducing the number of required data lines. At 125Msps, each channel outputs two bits simultaneously across two lanes. When the sampling rate drops below 62Msps, the device can switch to a single-bit-per-channel mode. The ADC comes in a compact 140-pin BGA μModule package measuring 11.25mm x 9mm, supporting eight simultaneous channels. It also includes an integrated bypass capacitor and a straight-through pinout, simplifying board layout and minimizing routing complexity.
The LTM9011 features an SPI-compatible interface, allowing users to configure various data settings. Options include a random data generator to minimize digital feedback, seven programmable LVDS output current levels, internal 100Ω termination resistors, and digital test patterns. These settings can be adjusted via SPI or hardwired, offering flexibility in system design.
This device marks the first in a pin-compatible 8-channel ADC family to support both 14-bit and 12-bit resolution across a wide sampling range—from 25Msps to 125Msps.
