Diodes Inc. has launched the AL8400, a high-performance linear LED driver controller designed to deliver precise current regulation for high-brightness LEDs. This versatile controller uses an external transistor to adjust LED currents, making it ideal for lighting, indication, and signage applications. It operates efficiently across a wide input voltage range, from 2.2V to 18V, and is compatible with both N-channel MOSFETs and NPN bipolar transistors.
The AL8400 features an exceptionally low current sense voltage of just 200mV, which significantly reduces power loss compared to traditional solutions. This design not only enhances system efficiency but also allows for greater flexibility in current control, enabling the driver to adjust LED currents from tens of milliamps up to over 1 amp. Its open collector output makes it easy to interface with external transistors for optimal performance.
By utilizing external turn-on transistors, the AL8400 helps improve power efficiency and drive capability. The controller requires only a minimal number of external components, allowing it to support longer LED strings that may require voltages exceeding 18V. This makes it a great choice for complex lighting systems where high voltage and long string lengths are necessary.
In addition to its excellent electrical performance, the AL8400 offers superior thermal stability and a 3% reference voltage at 25°C—outperforming many standard linear solutions on the market. These features help reduce overall bill of materials (BOM) costs while ensuring reliable operation under varying conditions. The device is available in a compact SOT353 package, offering a low-profile, space-saving solution with reduced power dissipation and lower electromagnetic interference (EMI), making it ideal for modern, high-density designs.
