DOE to host webcast on Energy Star, releases more CALiPER data

The DOE is to host a (very timely) webcast on Energy Star for Soilid State Lighting, and has also released round 5 results from its CALiPER testing program. The US Department of Energy (DOE) is hosting a 90-minute live webcast on June 26, 2008, on the DOE Energy Star? criteria for solid-state luminaries. The criteria were published in September 2007, and will become effective September 30, 2008.
The webcast has been planned for several weeks, before the current situation involving the EPA came to light (see the LEDs Magazine article entitled Energy Star Wars and the battle to label LED fixtures ).
The DOE says that the recent EPA release of an amendment to its Energy Star Light Fixture criteria has caused confusion for industry and efficiency program managers alike
David Rodgers, DOE Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, recently issued a response to the EPA criteria amendment, stating: DOE is aware of the confusion created by EPAs release of the amended criteria. Efforts to resolve the confusion are ongoing. The meantime, the September 2007 guidance stands as the valid guidance for SSL.
The DOE webcast on Energy Star for SSL will provide an opportunity to cut through the confusion and clarify details of the DOE criteria, product qualification process, testing requirements, quality assurance, and tools and resources for manufacturers and program sponsors. The webcast will also look At future plans to keep pace with rapid technology improvements.

DOE releases results from round 5 of SSL product testing
In related news, the DOE has completed Round 5 of product testing through its CALiPER program. A summary report containing the results from Round 5 testing is now available for download from the CALiPER section of the DOE SSL website.
Round 5 detailed test reports covering downlights, linear replacement lamps, A-Lamp and MR16 replacement lamps, desk/task lamps, undercabinet lighting, and outdoor lighting are now available.
The DOE allows detailed test results from CALiPER testing to be distributed in the public interest for noncommercial, educational purposes only. To streamline the request process for detailed test reports, DOE now provides the reports directly through a searchable on-line system at http:/ / .
