Can Sharp's OLED technology still compete with Samsung, which is already in production?

At the press conference last year marking the partnership between Hon Hai and Sharp, Terry Gou, Chairman of Hon Hai, expressed ambitious goals regarding Sharp's future in the OLED panel market, aiming to capture 80% of the global OLED panel market share. However, Gou also highlighted that besides OLED panels, Sharp holds a leading position in the world with its advanced IGZO technology, which is widely applied in tablet computers. He further mentioned that Sharp will continue to innovate in smartphone technologies moving forward. According to recent reports, Sharp’s OLED technology is still in the research and development phase, making it challenging to directly compete with Samsung, which has already achieved mass production. As a result, Sharp seems inclined to reduce its reliance on OLED panels rather than escalating its investments in them. A report from JPMorgan Chase suggests that Sharp may prioritize other display technologies over OLED due to the high costs and competitive pressure from established players like Samsung. Meanwhile, the Japan Economic News disclosed that Apple is planning to launch three new iPhones in the second half of 2018, all featuring OLED displays. It is anticipated that Samsung will exclusively supply the OLED panels for the upcoming iPhone models until at least the end of this year. Beyond 2018, Samsung and LG Display (LGD) are likely to become the primary suppliers for Apple’s OLED needs. Sharp's reconstruction plan includes an investment of 200 billion yen (approximately $1.8 billion USD) dedicated to the research and development of OLED panels and associated equipment. This figure represents roughly 51% of Hon Hai’s total investment of 388.8 billion yen (approximately $3.5 billion USD) in Sharp. Despite these efforts, the road ahead remains uncertain as Sharp grapples with the complexities of competing in a rapidly evolving industry dominated by giants such as Samsung. In conclusion, while Sharp has made significant strides in technological innovation, particularly through its IGZO technology, its entry into the OLED panel market faces considerable hurdles. As the global tech landscape continues to shift, companies like Sharp must balance strategic investments with realistic expectations to maintain their competitive edge.
