After installing an outdoor full-color LED display screen, technical staff often face issues with inconsistent color and brightness during the debugging phase. Based on years of experience in installation and maintenance, Shandong-based LED display manufacturers have identified three main factors that can lead to color and brightness inconsistencies in both outdoor and indoor COB full-color displays.
First, the LED light-emitting components themselves play a crucial role. These are mounted on the surface of the finished product, but during production, they may not be spectrally separated. Reputable manufacturers perform this separation after production to ensure better consistency. The smaller the brightness difference between adjacent levels, the more uniform the display appears. However, this process reduces production efficiency and increases inventory costs. Some manufacturers, in order to compete on price, skip this step entirely, mixing different LED lights together. This results in poor lamp consistency, lower-quality screens, and frequent color and brightness discrepancies.
Second, the driver chips used in these displays are typically constant-current drivers, such as the MBl5024/26. These chips provide 16 constant-current outputs, with each output having an error margin of up to 3%. Different chips may have an error of up to 6%, which is normal. However, if the LEDs used are not of the same quality or type, brightness differences can exceed 40%. This highlights the importance of using consistent LED components across the entire display.
To address these issues, one solution is to adjust the current flowing through the LEDs before the circuit design is finalized. Most LEDs can handle around 20 mA of continuous current, except for red LEDs, which reach saturation at lower currents. Another method involves using the human eye's visual inertia by applying pulse width modulation (PWM) for gray control. By adjusting the duty cycle of the light pulses, the display can achieve smooth transitions without visible flicker, as long as the refresh rate is high enough. PWM is widely used in digital control systems, and modern microcomputers support this method effectively.
It’s important to note that once an outdoor full-color LED display shows color and brightness inconsistencies, it cannot be corrected by post-installation equipment. The issue must be addressed during manufacturing. Therefore, if you encounter such problems, it’s advisable to contact your service provider or manufacturer promptly. Most contracts include provisions allowing users to return the display if quality issues arise before final acceptance.
