US security robot "suicide" case: AI is the risk of human civilization

Recently, a security robot named Knightscope K5 made headlines after it was seen immersing itself in a fountain in an office building in Washington, USA. Despite its impressive capabilities, the K5 has been deployed primarily for monitoring and crime prevention in various locations across the U.S., including offices and shopping malls. However, this recent "suicide" incident has raised concerns about the reliability and decision-making processes of autonomous machines. Meanwhile, tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has long expressed his worries about the dangers posed by artificial intelligence. During a recent interview, Musk reiterated his belief that AI poses a significant threat to human civilization. He emphasized the need for proactive regulation rather than waiting until problems arise. "Artificial intelligence is a rare case where we need to be ahead of it," he stated, highlighting the possibility of AI inadvertently causing conflicts through misinformation campaigns. Musk’s concerns echo those of other prominent figures like physicist Stephen Hawking, who also warned about the existential threats associated with AI. Their fears revolve around scenarios where AI could act independently without proper oversight, potentially leading to catastrophic outcomes. A recent survey conducted by researchers from Yale and Oxford Universities asked over 350 AI experts when they believe machines might outperform humans in specific tasks. The findings suggest that by 2024, AI could excel at translating languages, while by 2053, it might handle complex medical procedures like surgery. Additionally, the World Economic Forum predicts that AI will generate approximately two million new job opportunities over the next five years, particularly in fields related to digital innovation. However, not everyone views AI solely as a disruptive force. Some experts argue that while certain jobs may become obsolete due to automation, new roles requiring technical expertise will emerge simultaneously. For instance, Li Kaifu, founder of Sinovation Ventures, recently predicted that within a decade, half of today's workforce could see their roles transformed or eliminated thanks to advancements in AI technology. As we continue to integrate AI into our daily lives, balancing progress with caution remains crucial. Whether AI ultimately serves as a tool for enhancing productivity or becomes an uncontrollable entity depends largely on how society chooses to govern its development moving forward.
