Intel recently stated that Thunderbolt's lightning interface technology has been set to support PCI-E 3.0 standard specifications, and the transmission speed can be doubled, but the details will not be revealed. An Intel spokesperson Dave Salvator said: "We are trying to integrate PCI-E 3.0 into future versions of the Thunderbol interface, but this time we are not going to announce more details."
Intel Thunderbolt technology integrates PCI-E and DisplayPort high-speed bus standards and supports two-way data flow. The current dual-channel full bandwidth is 10 Gbps. This is achieved using PCI-E 2.0 x4. If you upgrade to PCI-E 3.0, the transmission bandwidth will double to 20 Gbps.
It is unclear whether the Thunderbolt of PCI-E version 3.0 will continue to use copper wire, or it may be replaced with fiber as previously envisaged. Intel announced a year ago that the next generation of external interconnect Post-Thunderbolt (PTB/Launch) will be based on silicon photonics elements and fiber, which can achieve an amazing speed of 50Gbps over a distance of 100 meters.
The PTB preliminary plan will be available until 2015, and the PCI-E 3.0 Thunderbolt may be launched between 2013 and 2014.
