More and more international lighting manufacturers, COB products in mainstream packaging factories in mainland China and Taiwan are well known.

The change in attitude is mainly driven by technology and market. The technology driver is that early COB reliability is not good, light efficiency is not high, and light fading is solved. The COB light source is soft and the light quality of the luminaire is improved. The market drive lies in the further improvement of the COB cost performance, the light source tends to be standardized, and the packaging factory and the lighting product factory can be easily docked.

Current statistics show that the total share of COB in China's packaged products has exceeded 7%. The call for COB packaging is very loud and the signs of warming are obvious. There are international packaging manufacturers predict that by 2017, the power, COB, and high power will be three-points from the output value. But the outlook is not clear, and due to technology and cost constraints, COB packaging technology can not quickly take advantage. However, the market share of COB products in directional spotlight lighting will continue to expand, and this area should be able to occupy more than 2/3.

In the field of commercial lighting, track spotlights, ceiling lights, MR16, GU10 have begun to fully adopt COB packaging, traditional light sources have begun to be gradually eliminated, and the market for 1W K2 structure lamp beads is getting smaller and smaller. In the field of home lighting, the demand for floodlighting is dominant. Only some COB ceiling lights and COB downlights will be selected. There are not many COB applications in the home lighting market. In the field of outdoor lighting, the floodlights mainly use COB light source, 30W, 50W rural road lighting street lamps, the requirements are not high, and the COB light source is gradually being adopted. Outdoor street lights and tunnel lights are currently mainly used in a single 1-3W power device or a high-power COB light source package. The two are equally divided, but the proportion of COB is gradually increasing. In general, the application market for COB is mainly in commercial lighting, because this area requires accent lighting, highlighting the objects being illuminated and creating a commercial atmosphere.

At present, some companies have launched the "the highest level of luminous efficiency in the industry" COB light source, the color temperature is 3000K, the light efficiency reaches 130lm/W, and reaches 143lm/W at 5000K, which has generated some objection in the industry. Simply speaking, the luminous efficiency does not have much practical significance, and should be linked to the price. After all, it is still a cost-effective competition. The COB serialization mode is flexible, and the light efficiency has a lot to do with the number and size of the chips. For example, if a COB light source with a current of 700 mA is used normally, driving at 350 mA or lower, the light effect will naturally go up. Conversely, with 1A current, the light effect will come down. In the market, enterprises choose COB light source, which is based on the lower limit of light efficiency of their own lamps, and then talk about the price. Low light efficiency and high price will not work.

The international brands represented by Citizen and Sharp have the technical start-up and brand awareness advantages in COB light source, but Japanese companies are too pursuing perfection and are not dominant in market development. The advantages of domestic companies are mainly reflected in cost performance and service. Nowadays, the "market is forced" mechanism is popular. Under the fierce competition, the first-mover advantage will gradually lose. The biggest competitive advantage of domestic enterprises is cost performance. The main material chip, substrate and glue of COB light source can be made in China, which will make the cost performance advantage more obvious. In the process of continuous development of LED lighting products, COB light sources will have new requirements, requiring strong research and development strength and fast response. As a global manufacturing base for LED lighting products, China has more than 5,000 semiconductor lighting companies. Foreign brands have no advantage in response speed, and domestic enterprises with research and development technology have become an important choice to provide perfect pre-sales and after-sales services.

From the perspective of the industry chain, COB needs to improve in several aspects in the future. Early adopting many small power chips or several high-power chips, the current power chips show higher cost performance and reliability, but these are based on the development of TOP SMT pipe technology. The advantages of COB's heat dissipation structure have not been fully realized. Flip-chip technology and eutectic technology have more advantages in COB package form. It is necessary to further standardize the COB light source, and the production and application scale effects will be fully manifested, resulting in an increase in cost performance. Large-scale production requires automation equipment. At present, most of the enterprises use the production equipment as the original TOP SMT tube equipment, which is not efficient in point die and seed line. The automation of testing and packaging is much lower, most of which is done by manual operation. The large-scale production of COB requires the specialization and automation of production equipment.

The LED package has entered the era of scale competition, 0.2W, 0.5W medium power devices, and the cost performance advantage is obvious.
