Alibaba announced in Shenzhen: Fully enter IoT

The 2018 Yunqi Conference Shenzhen Summit took place, with the theme "Driving Digital China." Hu Xiaoming, Senior Vice President of Alibaba and President of Alibaba Cloud, announced that Alibaba would fully enter the Internet of Things (IoT) field. IoT is positioned as the next major growth area for Alibaba, following cloud computing, finance, and logistics. At the event, Kui Wei, General Manager of Alibaba Cloud's IoT Division, detailed the company's "1234" strategy. This strategy stands for "One Cloud, Two Ends, Three Types of Partners, and Four Major Areas." The goal is to build a comprehensive ecosystem that supports developers, manufacturers, and industry partners in creating innovative IoT solutions. Under the "One Cloud" initiative, Alibaba Cloud has developed an IoT cloud platform aimed at reducing the complexity and cost of developing IoT applications. Launched in 2014, this platform was officially opened to developers last year at the Yunqi Conference, with continuous improvements made to enhance its usability and versatility. The "Two Ends" include AliOS, an IoT operating system for devices, and "linkEdge," an edge computing solution. Since being open-sourced at the previous Yunqi Conference, AliOS has seen multiple updates, adding over 20 new features in just five months. Meanwhile, linkEdge continues to evolve, offering 55 micro-service modules that can operate in environments as small as 50MB, supporting six different use cases. To support developers, Alibaba has committed to investing 100 million yuan in resources, aiming to help 100,000 developers create IoT applications using its platform. Additionally, two development boards will be launched, along with a one-billion-yuan subsidy program to encourage collaboration. Alibaba also plans to allocate 60 million yuan in education funds through Alibaba University to provide comprehensive training for developers. For chip and module manufacturers, Alibaba has established a testing laboratory in partnership with ICT, offering free testing services valued at 50 million yuan. This will help improve production quality and enable companies to better integrate into Alibaba’s ecosystem through platforms like Taobao and Tmall. Alibaba will also open its sales channels to all partners, ensuring broader access to its IoT solutions. The company is focusing on four key areas: smart cities, smart life, smart manufacturing, and smart cars. In smart cities, Alibaba aims to break down data silos by integrating city departments onto a unified IoT platform. In Wuxi, the company has already launched China’s first IoT town, connecting 31 applications under one platform. Future plans include collaborating with local fire departments to integrate traffic, building, and water data, improving emergency response times. For smart life, Alibaba is working with real estate developers like Vanke and Midea to create intelligent communities. Over 124 types of products are now connected, including home appliances, shared umbrellas, and shops. The goal is to reduce energy consumption by 20% and promote a more sustainable living environment. In smart manufacturing, Alibaba’s IoT platform helps SMEs digitize their operations, enabling real-time data visualization and efficient management. The company is focused on delivering scalable IoT solutions tailored for smaller businesses. Regarding smart cars, Alibaba has partnered with SAIC to preload AliOS on its vehicles, integrating car, user, and service ecosystems. These innovations are driving the transformation of traditional vehicles into smart, connected machines. Kui Wei noted that Alibaba’s IoT cloud platform has been live for about six months, with over 1,200 service providers and 22,000 applications on the platform. Daily, it provides diverse IoT solutions, helping minimize R&D and commercialization costs while accelerating innovation in the fragmented IoT market.
