The meeting aimed to address growing concerns about product safety and to promote transparency in the market. **What Makes the “Explosive” Air Purifier So Concerning?** Before March 15 this year, SEPIA, under the commission of the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision, conducted a quality and safety risk assessment on FFU air purifiers that are popular in both physical stores and online platforms. The results were alarming: serious quality and safety issues were found, especially with FFU models. FFU stands for Fan Filter Unit, a device widely used in cleanrooms and industrial settings due to its high airflow and efficient particulate removal. However, as more companies have entered the consumer market, FFUs have started to be marketed as household air purifiers, often under misleading names like “FFU air purifier.” Testing of 13 FFU models revealed that all of them failed safety standards, resulting in a 100% failure rate. Similarly, among six online “explosive” models tested, brands such as Sakura Man and Pu Reisen also failed. According to a report from Dongfang.com, the association has already shared its findings with industry players, prompting internal reviews. However, follow-up investigations showed that some unqualified FFU models are still available on e-commerce platforms, alongside similar products being sold in large quantities. The association has since contacted the quality supervision authorities and e-commerce platforms to track down and remove these items. In response, the association issued a consumer warning, advising buyers to be cautious until the quality of such products is properly addressed. **Online Tools for Checking Air Purifier Quality** At the end of 2017, the “Shanghai Platform for Product Quality Improvement” was launched by the Shanghai Municipal Quality Supervision Bureau. This platform allows consumers to check quality parameters of air purifier manufacturers and products, as well as view quality service commitments. Additionally, the platform serves as a channel for releasing product inspection results, risk warnings, and consumer guidance. **Proposed Establishment of an Industry Development and Promotion Committee** As part of its ongoing efforts, the association was commissioned by the Shanghai Quality Supervision Bureau to conduct the “2017 Air Purifier Product Quality Evaluation.” The findings revealed that some companies still fail to meet basic household air purifier standards. In response, the association is working on further quality improvement initiatives. In light of current market challenges, member organizations of the alliance proposed the establishment of an “Industry Development and Promotion Work Committee,” composed of leading brand enterprises within the alliance.
