Continental Group and Osram joint venture signed a further agreement plan to officially start in the second half of the year

The OSRAM Group and the Continental Group have successfully concluded discussions on their joint venture, Osram Continental GmbH, and signed a formal agreement. This 50% joint venture aims to combine the strengths of both companies in lighting, light control, and electronics, with the goal of delivering innovative, coordinated, and optimized products to the market more efficiently. Notably, the new company will operate as an independent entity, maintaining its own brand identity while leveraging the combined expertise of both parent companies. According to Gaogong LED, the two companies first announced their intention to form a joint venture back on November 6, 2017. The initiative was designed to merge cutting-edge lighting technologies with advanced software and electronics, creating intelligent lighting solutions tailored for the automotive sector. The joint venture, which will be based in the Munich area, is expected to have around 1,500 employees and 17 global locations, with annual sales reaching hundreds of millions of euros. Following the completion of legal contracts, approvals from supervisory boards, and anti-monopoly clearances, the joint venture is set to launch in the second half of 2018. At that time, OSRAM will transfer its automotive solid-state lighting (SSL) business to the new company, while Continental will contribute its lighting control operations from its body and safety division. This collaboration will result in a comprehensive portfolio of smart, end-to-end lighting solutions, including advanced semiconductor-based modules, optics, software, and sensor technology. The joint venture is positioned to drive innovation in automotive lighting by integrating lighting, sensing, and electronics into a single, cohesive application. For instance, it aims to enable communication between vehicles and their surroundings through light-based signaling, enhancing road safety and driver experience. Hans-Joachim Schwabe, CEO of Osram’s Specialty Lighting Division, emphasized the role of digitalization in transforming automotive lighting. He stated, “Through this partnership, we aim to lead the development of next-generation technologies. By combining our expertise with Continental’s, we can accelerate innovation and deliver smarter, more integrated lighting systems.” Andreas Wolf, Head of Continental’s Body and Safety Business Unit, added, “This joint venture allows us to push the boundaries of automotive lighting. By merging OSRAM’s lighting knowledge with our software and electronics capabilities, we are well-positioned to offer customers unparalleled lighting solutions.” Despite its headquarters being in the Munich area, the joint venture will maintain a strong global presence, ensuring rapid responses to customer needs across different regions. With their shared vision, Continental and OSRAM are set to redefine the future of smart lighting, delivering enhanced experiences for drivers and road users alike.
