In recent years, 5G-V2X has emerged as one of the most promising applications of 5G technology, driving innovation across industries. Since 2017, the development and testing of this technology have been based on the latest 3GPP New Radio (NR) standards. A significant milestone was achieved when Telefonica and Huawei established the world’s first Proof-of-Concept (PoC) test platform for 5G vehicle communication networks within the 5G Joint Innovation Lab in Madrid, Spain.
This PoC demonstrated that Ultra-Reliable and Low-Latency Communications (URLLC) offer enhanced system capacity and broader coverage, making it highly suitable for supporting V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) applications. The results showed that URLLC can effectively meet the demanding requirements of autonomous driving, including ultra-low latency and high reliability.
An image showing the collaboration between Telefonica and Huawei highlights their joint efforts in verifying that URLLC is capable of supporting 5G-V2X. The experiment took place in a real-world outdoor environment, such as dense urban areas, suburbs, or rural regions. It successfully achieved a latency of just 1 millisecond, with a reliability rate of 99.999%, which lays the foundation for large-scale commercial deployment of 5G wireless networks globally.
5G-V2X services include features like vehicle platooning, extended sensor capabilities, advanced driver assistance, and remote driving. For autonomous driving to become a reality, the 5G NR system must be further optimized to meet strict requirements such as high reliability and fast response times. By integrating NR EdgeLink, vehicles can communicate seamlessly, and the URLLC mode provides a flexible framework to support low-latency and high-reliability needs.
In the Telefonica-Huawei 5G-V2X PoC, a novel independent radio transmission frame structure was used, whether transmitting from the base station to the vehicle or between vehicles, enabling faster and more efficient communication. This approach significantly improves the performance of ultra-low latency communication.
The NR system framework is highly adaptable, supporting advanced features such as Polar Codes for small V2X packet debugging and optimizing Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) processes to enhance transmission reliability. It also enables real-time sending of short packets to control vehicle operations even in inactive states.
Enrique Blanco, Technical Director at Telefonica, emphasized that the successful PoC between Telefonica and Huawei marks another important step toward the commercialization of 5G. Looking ahead, the company plans to continue its collaboration with Huawei, exploring new use cases and delivering innovative solutions to customers.
