One, out of the box

The R6400 is a follow-up version of NETGEAR's most famous "Induction Cooker" R6300v2. Its appearance is very similar to that of the Nighthawk series R7000 and R6900. The total speed is 1750M. The three-antenna architecture enables 2.4G to reach 450M and 5G to reach 1300M.

2.1 Hardware parameters

2.2 appearance details

Third, the original firmware features introduced

3.1 Networking

The hardware connection is not described too much. From the Cat LAN port (which can also be a superior route), the network cable is connected to the WAN port of the R6400, and then the power supply can be connected. The R6400 supports the routing mode and AP mode but does not support bridging or WISP.

3.2 First Time Installation Setup - Access Point (AP) Mode

Computer experts please ignore this section.

What is AP mode? Let me try to introduce it first.

Connect the router (the LAN port of the main route leads to the WAN port of the R6400). When the computer is connected to the wireless network of the R6400, the web page will automatically pop up to initialize the settings.

If you do not want to toss, click "Next" to automatically complete the settings, do not know if you choose "No"

It is recommended that I use the access point mode (AP mode) to set up the R6400.

In this step, selecting "No" will assign a new SSID and password. Select “Yes” to turn off the WiFi of the host route and use only the WiFi function of the R6400. To allow the existing device to connect to the R6400 automatically, you need to set the SSID and password to be the same as the host route. Here I choose "No", that is, the R6400 sends out a wireless signal again, and the wireless signal of the host route exists at the same time.

The setup will be completed and the router will restart. After starting, you can connect to the above allocated NETGEAR73 and start surfing the Internet.

Although I have written more setup steps here, I understand them well. Friends who have not set up routers before should not worry about them. You can press the prompt “Next” button. If you don’t understand them, select “No”.

Note that the IP address of the computer is assigned by the main route. To enter the background of the R6400, you need to know the IP address assigned by the main route to the R6400 .

Once you enter the R6400 background again, you will be prompted to change the administrator password. The initial administrator account password is admin, password.

After completing this step, the R6400 is completely installed.

The next step will guide the download of the NETGEAR Wizard and the easy-to-share Vault application. If you don't need it, just close the window and log in again. This shows the operating mode as an access point.

The latest firmware version (1.0.1.12_1.0.11) and interface language version (1.0.1.12_2.1.38.1) are automatically detected after the R6400 is successfully connected to the network.

3.3 Routing Mode

To change the operating mode of the R6400 from access point mode to route mode, open R6400 Background> Advanced> Advanced Settings> Wireless Access Point, and uncheck the Enable AP Mode check box. After the R6400 is restarted, the connected device is assigned an IP address and no longer shares the IP segment with the main route.

The new IP segment assigned to me by the R6400 is 10.0.0.X. You can also modify it into other LAN IP segments, such as 10.xxx and 192.168.xx.

3.4 R6400 as Host Route to Internet

This also briefly mentions that the R6400 is connected to the optical cat or the main route. Select the dialing mode as required and enter the account password to access the Internet. Special networks may need to manually set IP and DNS.

3.5 Wireless Settings

The wireless settings are to manage the R6400's WiFi name, password and area. Different areas will affect the WiFi signal strength. NETGEAR supports 2.4G and 5G using the same SSID after the latest firmware update. Earlier versions do not support it.

Open the Telnet client (Windows can be enabled in system functions), enter the telnet router IP , and connect to the router. Enter wl txpwr_target_max to see the transmit power.

3.6 ReadyShare Easy to Share

This function is an important function of NETGEAR. After connecting the USB external storage, it can realize SMB shared storage, DLNA media server function, iTunes server and Vault automatic backup function.

There are many devices and software that support DLNA. PC-side Windows Media Player, smart TV, and box can use XBMC (KODI). The default music app on the mobile phone side also supports DLNA.

ReadyShare makes it easy to share Vault, that is, select the specified computer directory to automatically backup and backup to the router's USB storage. However, the “backup” of the ReadyShare Vault is an incremental backup. For example, if an A.txt file is modified, a new one, A.1.txt, will be saved in the USB storage. 3.7 NETGEAR Downloader

The R6400 has a Downloader downloader (R6900 doesn't!). Currently supports FTP/HTTP, BT and eDonkey download methods, single task download speed of 2.6MB / s or so, because the use of a 16G U disk Kingston, its speed is not fast, can have such a download speed is already pretty good.

3.8 Remote Management

Although the R6400 is not as rich in features as domestic smart routers, it can also implement remote management functions. First open the remote management in "Advanced > Advanced Settings". If the R6400 is used as a first-class route and has a public IP address, you can directly access this URL on any external network.

If the public IP address of the router is not fixed, you can enable dynamic DNS service in Advanced > Dynamic DNS. You can use an existing NETGEAR DDNS or NO-IP DDNS account. NETGEAR supports dynamic DNS services such as NETGEAR and noip.com. ,, (Wireless regions need to choose China), you can also apply for a free DDNS host name of .mynetgear.com.

Note: This free domain name needs to be renewed every 30 times. Whether it will be deleted or not will be deleted. The domain name of my R7800 will be deleted. At present, I have not yet found a solution. Fortunately, you can log in to noip.com to reset a free domain name.

Fourth, signal testing

In contrast to the R7800, the R6400’s region performed better in terms of wireless signal strength when selecting Australia. SuperNB is the wireless signal of R7800, and NETGEAR-R6400 is the wireless signal of R6400.

Currently, the region selected by R6400 is China, and Super WiFi mode is enabled. The R7800 region is North America and cannot be modified.

Location 1: Zero distance from the router. The signal strength R6400 is slightly better than R7800.

Location 2: 3 meters from the routing router, no shelter. The R6400 is slightly better than the R7800.

Location 3: 6 meters from the router, no shelter. Where SuperNB_Global is located, ignore its signal strength. The R6400 is comparable to the R7800.

Location 4: 15 meters away from the router, every other load-bearing wall. The signal covers difficult areas. The R7800 is slightly better than the R6400 in the 2.4G band, and the R6400 is slightly better in the 5G. But actually measured this position although 5G can connect, but the actual speed is relatively slow, at such a far distance there is a bearing wall blocking, or 2.4G penetrating stronger.

As can be seen from the above signal strength test, the default region of the R7800 is North America. The transmit power referenced by the R6400 should be 21.5. At this time, the region selected by the R6400 is China + Super WiFi, the transmit power is 22.5, and the R6400 is in the signal. Slightly stronger than R7800 because of the difference in transmit power.

Although the R7800 signal strength slightly worse, but in actual use will feel faster network speed, this may be R7800 used BCM4366 and R6400 used BCM4360, BCM4331 before the gap it.

Fifth, speed test

5.1 Wireless Speed ​​Measurement

The test points and the R7800 and R6400 are unobstructed at a distance of 5 meters, and the R6400 is used as a subordinate route of the R7800. Basically, the maximum speed of the 100M bandwidth can be achieved in the speed measurement.

The computer connects 5G WiFi of R6400, the connection rate is 1.3Gbps, can use Thunder download to reach 100M bandwidth full speed, about 12MB/s.

5.2 USB read and write speed

The computer uses a 5G wireless connection with the R6400 at a connection rate of 1300 Mbps and no distance from 5 meters. Read 14.2MB/s and write 10.9MB/s.

The computer uses a Gigabit wired connection with the R6400. Read 36.7MB/s and write 24.8MB/s.

The data I tested on the R7800 was about twice as fast as the R6400. The difference is still quite obvious, but the price can be more than double. I can understand it. The speed of the R6400 can basically meet the transmission of files in the LAN, and there is no problem when playing high-definition video.

Six, other features introduced

Of course, the functions of the R6400 and the NETGEAR Nighthawk series are roughly the same, including guest networks, parental controls, port mapping/forwarding, static routing, UPnP, IPv6, traffic control, VPN services, LED control, and VLAN/IPTV.

Compared with high-end routers, there is no dynamic dynamic QoS function (with normal QoS) and MU-MIMO is not supported.

Seven, measured experience

After all the hardware and functions have been analyzed, how about this kind of router? Below from the online video playback, online games, file download three network demand scenes to test the R6400 capabilities.

7.1 Video Playback

A total of 8 devices are used: 5 mobile phones (iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone5S, LG G5, Samsung Note3, ASUS Zenfone Zoom), an iPad mini 1, a desktop PC, and a millet box (Santa Show “Half-Glamor Allure”. ..).

In addition to the R7800, which is a wired connection of the millet box in the TV cabinet, all other equipment is connected to the R6400 in 5G mode.

During the playback, check the system resource usage of the R6400. The CPU uses less than 5% and the memory uses only 70MB. According to this situation, it is not rigorously estimated that in the case of sufficient Internet bandwidth, the R6400 can support at least 20 devices to access the Internet at the same time, and the average number of households should be sufficient.

7.2 Game Experience

After the QoS of the R6400 is turned on, there is a certain optimization effect on the game, and the delay can be kept below 100ms. The dynamic QoS function of the high-end models such as the R7800 can more effectively guarantee the game network. This was demonstrated in the evaluation of the R7800.

Combining video playback, games, and downloads, the R6400 performs satisfactorily on the network. The R6400 does not have any distinction with the R7800. It can fully utilize the maximum capacity of the 100M fiber and ensure the access device. Smooth Internet access.

Eight, official reform firmware flash

After rummaging through the forum, it was found that although the R6400 is very similar to the R6300v2, the system still has nuances, so it is not possible to directly brush the Merlin of the R6300v2. At present, only the DD (it is said that it is not easy to use) and the official firmware of Xiaobao Dashen have added some functions.

Brush method is very simple, download Xiaobao God's official firmware, based on the 1.0.0.26_1.0.14 version. The file name is kernel_rootfs_image-0.2.chk. You can upload this file by selecting "Advanced> Management> Router Upgrade" in the R6400 backend.

The prompt version is older than the existing version, ignore it and continue to the next step.

After the firmware is completed, the router can be automatically restarted. The process takes about 5 minutes. After updating the firmware, the original settings are all in place and can be used directly. The new features we all understand, no longer say more here.

Although the firmware of the modified firmware can have more functions, it is not necessary for users who do not need to toss. Why do you want to compare R6400 with these two high-end goods? Because the memory and flash memory of the three are the same! All are 256MB of memory and 128MB of flash memory.

R8000 is BCM4709A0 (dual core 1GHz), R7000 is BCM4709A0 (dual core 1GHz), R6400 is BCM4708A0 (dual core 800MHz)

For the average home, the R6400 is fully capable of supporting 20 devices at the same time, there is no problem with the Internet. The speed of watching videos and downloading files is very stable, and QoS has a certain optimization effect on the delay of the game. Routers are devices that are low-perceived during the Internet access. The advantages of NETGEAR are its performance and stability. Of course, in the end, we still have to suggest that in view of the particularity of the domestic market, high-end users are not satisfied with the basic functions of the router.
